How do you reach disadvantaged groups?

One of our key strengths is our ability to attract candidates to projects. Over the last 13 years, we’ve worked closely with the public, private, voluntary and community sectors, with colleges and training providers, and with local regeneration initiatives. These Referral Partners help us widen the pool of candidates we attract and reach key disadvantaged groups.

In addition we advertise on sites – such as Gaydar and Over50.com – that target particular minority groups, as well as on mainstream sites like Reed, Monster and Gumtree. We also attend fairs, put up posters, put leaflets through letterboxes and make sure our branches (each of them in the heart of the community it recruits from) are eye-catching and welcoming.

How do you secure employer vacancies?

We’re demand led. In other words, we market real, sustainable jobs by starting with what employers, not candidates, want. This means we realistically reflect the local labour market. We invest heavily in building relationships with employers so that we secure a good range of vacancies. Almost half our staff are solely employer-facing, and spend all day, every day, visiting, calling and networking. It’s taken us over 13 years to develop these relationships with employers and, in a lot of cases, our clients – who include some of the best employers in the UK – recruit primarily through us.

We also focus on altering local employers’ perceptions of unemployed people, and market candidates’ abilities and potential, not the disadvantage or background.

  • Diagnostic assessment of candidate needs and job aspirations.
  • Referral to appropriate training and support to help candidates gain ‘soft’ skills like time management, handling finances and confidence.
  • Interview coaching and CV advice.
  • Action planning and review.
  • Proactive and reactive post-placement support.

Do you hold any accreditations?

We’re very proud of the awards, recognition and accreditations we’ve amassed. Click here for the full list. However, some of the most recent and most satisfying are:

  • The award of ‘fully assured’ status by Jobcentre Plus Financial Appraisal and Monitoring after our last inspection in December 2005.
  • ‘Investors in People’ status following assessment in December 2003.
  • Endorsement of our approaches by:
    • New Deal Task Force
    • Policy Action Team for Jobs
    • Neighbourhood Renewal Unit
    • Department for Work and Pensions
    • Social Exclusion Unit
    • London Development Agency
    • REC Accreditation. The REC are also using us to help them set the standard for diversity across the recruitment industry.

How effective are your processes?

Very. Our highly effective and bespoke IT systems capture data, streamline processes, reduce paperwork, diagnose outcomes – and have been described by the National Audit Office as ‘some of the best we’ve ever seen’.

We have the planning, capacity, experience, resources and operational systems in place not only to take on contracts, but also to deliver them on time and within budget. Our systems, processes and procedures meet contractual obligations and provider guidance and focus 100% on delivery and the continual evaluation of quality. Project objectives and outputs are SMART and measured against Key Performance Indicators at regularly programmed milestones.

Any proof you’ve been successful?

Yes, lots. Here’s a brief snapshot.

  • We’ve been a delivery agent for Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, European Social Fund and Jobcentre Plus Ethnic Minority Outreach since each was launched.
  • All our contracts have achieved all key performance criteria: starts, job outcomes, referral to mainstream provision and spend.
  • We recently secured a contract to deliver an innovative programme, under HM Treasury’s Invest to Save Budget, as the main pan-London employer interface for a project targeting inactive BME groups. The project was one of only three supported by the Department for Work and Pensions.
  • We successfully deliver job brokerage services to large projects such as Employment Zones and JCP ESF Co-financing.
