Introducing a new Eastender

A brand new at work branch opens in Newham

Barking Road, E6 is the new home of London’s latest at work branch. Opening with five staff and an 18 month contract awarded by Newham Council, it’s focused on helping at least 650 unemployed local residents into fulfilling jobs. Newham is one of London’s most deprived areas with a large ethnic minority population and high unemployment figures. But it’s also poised to benefit from massive regeneration as it gears up for the 2012 Olympics. at work’s proven job brokerage abilities, plus the specialist skills of established external partners, will make sure Newham’s residents get the most from the ongoing investment.

“Although we have huge numbers to place into work, I’m confident we can hit our targets,” says Branch Manager Maria Lopez. “Already we’re working with a number of large employers in and around the area, all of whom recognise that employing local people from all cultures has a positive effect at every level of their business. Despite being here for just a short time, we’ve managed to establish fantastic relationships with some of Newham’s bigger employers, offering them advice and guidance as well as well-prepared, quality candidates. B&Q, for instance, has been a real success. We first started working with them in August, when they saw six of our candidates and employed five.” When it comes to capitalising on the benefits of recruiting local talent, we practise what we preach. As Maria adds “All our staff are from the local area, and from diverse backgrounds. That means we understand the area fully and what it needs. I have total confidence that we’ll make a huge impression on the community here. We already are!”
